Ten attacks in Derry jail with assault rate doubling in three years

Ten attacks on prison officers have taken place in Magilligan prison over the past three years with assaults more than doubling over the period.

In 2017 there were just two recorded attacks in the County Derry jail but this rose to three in 2018 before jumping to five last year.

It was the lowest level of inmate on staff violence of any of the prisons of the north, however, with far worse rates recorded in the north's eastern jails.

At Maghaberry there were 115 attacks while in Hydebank Wood College and Womens Prison there were 41 attacks during the same three year period.
