Third series of Derry Girls ‘is filming this year’

The third series of Derry Girls is to be filmed this year, according to one of its stars

Actress Nicola Coughlan, who plays Claire in the popular Channel 4 series, confirmed the news on Twitter in response to a fan who said he hoped series three would be made this year.

Nicola, who is currently winning even more fans across the world through her role in Netflix hit, Bridgerton said she ‘can confirm’ that the long-awaited new series of the locally-based show ‘is filming this year.’

She added how she ‘cannae bloody wait.’

The Galway actress told how Covid 19 ‘pushed back filming several times’ but added how the new series will be worth waiting for.

“Honestly, the storylines in this series are the best we’ve ever done so I can’t tell you how worth it the wait will have been.’

The news delighted Nicola’s followers, with the Tweet gaining over 35,000 likes and many excited responses.

Derry Girls, written by Derry woman Lisa McGee, is set in the city in the 1990s and series one and two were huge hits for Channel 4.

The first series was broadcast in 2018 and the second in 2019, both to a large viewership. The third series had been commissioned for 2020, but like many others, had to be postponed due to the Covid 19 pandemic.

The show has won numerous awards,including Best Comedy Writing in Television at the British Screenwriters’ Award.
