Officials, however, have failed to rule out selling off some of the assets at the publicly-owned area.

In response to concerns raised locally, the Office of the First Minister and Deputy First Minister and urban regeneration company Ilex, were asked whether there was any plans to privatise any part of the Ebrington site and also what benefit local people will receive from any rental or sale of assets, and how this would manifest itself.

An OFMDFM spokesperson replied: “Ministers are determined to ensure Ebrington will deliver massive benefits for the North West, including much needed employment opportunities.

“Expressions of interest have been invited for a variety of uses on the Ebrington site with final expressions of interest sought by March 31.

“Lambert Smith Hampton, the agent responsible for handling requests has advised there has already been very strong interest from a wide variety of potential tenants.

“Only when we have received all formal expressions of interest can any sale or leasing arrangements on the Ebrington site be considered.”

A spokesperson for Ilex said: “This is a very exciting opportunity for all parties interested in creating employment on site.

“We will be happy to provide more information when the expressions of interest process has been completed.”
