Video: New Magilligan jail won't be ready until 2025/26 at earliest

Jails Minister Claire Sugden has suggested a new prison at Magilligan will eventually be completed almost twenty years after it was first touted by the late NIO Minister Paul Goggins.

And that’s only if she can secure capital funding for the rebuild in the immediate future.

“By all means, the building work will start when we can secure capital

funding.

“If that were to happen soon, for example, I would expect a fully developed prison to be delivered by 2025/26,” said Ms Sugden.

That will be 18 or 19 years after the late Mr Goggins first announced a new build back in December 2007.

The Justice Minister told MLAs an outline business case was approved by the Department of Finance in January 2015 but capital funding needs to be secured and that that will be considered when setting the next budget.
