Waterside device was viable say PSNI

A number of residents were moved from their homes while police and ATO examined the device which was found at around 5pm.

Detective Sergeant Brian Reid said :”The device was made safe and has been seized for forensic examination.”

SDLP MLA Gerry Diver said: “The reaction of the residents is one of disgust and shock that this still could happen in 2016.

“Clearly whoever placed the device had no regard for the safety of people of Gelvin Gardens. These are lethal devices, and I can speak with a degree of authority having being targeted by one of the devices, albeit some years ago.

“These are devices that kill or maim people. This is a residential area. It is disgusting, repugnant and something which the entire community rejects.”

Detectives from Strand Road Reactive and Organised Crime are now investigating this incident and we would like to speak to witnesses or anyone with information.

We are especially keen to hear from anyone who noticed any suspicious vehicles or people in the area at any time on Sunday, March 6.
