Fresh yellow snow and ice warnings for Derry and Donegal with cold snap continuing until weekend

Fresh warnings for snow and ice have been issued for Derry and Donegal with the cold weather set to continue until the weekend.

Both the Met Office and Met Éireann have said there is a potential for wintry showers of hail, sleet and snow across the North West this evening and into Thursday.

Status yellow weather warnings have been issued for both Derry and Donegal.

The Derry warning is live from 5pm on Wednesday to noon on Thursday with the Donegal alert running from midnight until noon tomorrow.

Cold Arctic air means temperatures will be considerably lower than normal with lows of -2 degrees possible.

This could bring some sleet, hail and even snow at higher elevations in the Sperrins and Donegal hills.

“Frequent wintry showers will continue to feed inland through Wednesday evening, overnight and into Thursday morning across Northern Ireland. As temperatures fall during the evening, snow is likely to begin to settle in places, whilst ice may form on untreated surfaces.

"Many low-lying areas may see little lying snow, especially across southern counties. However, 1-2 cm is likely in places, with 3-5 cm over some higher routes such as the Glenshane Pass, with perhaps very locally more across the higher parts of the Sperrins,” the Met Office state.

In Donegal ‘snow showers are also possible at times today, but will mainly be confined to higher ground’.

"Highest temperatures of 3 to 5 degrees, but it will feel colder with an added wind chill from moderate to fresh northerly winds,” Met Éireann have advised.

Commuters are warned of the potential for some travel delays.
