Earlier this month Eglinton based dancer Zoe Kyte performed as Titania in the Irish National Youth ballet's production of A Midsummer's Night Dream.

It’s a role that hasn’t come easy, as Zoe has had to show dedication, discipline and determination to reach the level of perfectionism required of a professional ballerina.

Currently studying for her GCSE’s the Limavady Grammar Student has had a packed month of revision and training.

Speaking to the ‘Journal’ she said, “It has been very busy but I love to dance, and I also train in tap, modern and acro as well as ballet. It’s something I’m now considering as a full-time career.

“The show was great experience and my fellow class members from the Rainbow School of Dance travelled down to Dublin to see my performance, along with my dance teacher Venessa Chapman.

“The company are performance based so the experience is invaluable and the training is of such a high standard.

“It’s tough work being on pointe for eight hours every Saturday but I get to train a full ballet from start to finish which is amazing experience.”

Zoe’s mum Sandra is rightly very proud of Zoe.

“I sent Zoe to ballet lessons because she as a very shy child and I thought it would help with her confidence. Venessa said ‘leave her with me’ and now she dances at every opportunity. Back then I never imagined she would now be dancing with a national ballet company.

“She misses out on so much just so she can dance. Every Saturday she gets the 6am bus to Dublin, practises ballet all day from 10am-6pm and then gets the bus back. For a 16 year old she’s very focused and sacrifices so much.

“It was a very proud moment to see her performing as Titania.

“She’ll have to re-audition for her position in the ballet again this year as they only take on the very best dancers every year.

“Zoe also attends competitions regularly and has danced with the English Youth Ballet at the Grand Opera House in Belfast.”
