Here are the Bristol and Gloucestershire locations where Agatha Christie adaptation The Pale Horse was filmed

Viewers will follow the character of Mark Easterbrook in The Pale Horse - the TV adaptation based loosely on Agatha Christie's 1961 novel of the same name.

Easterbrook attempts to discover how his name ended up on a list that was found in the shoe of a young woman who had died.

It airs at 9pm on BBC One on Sunday 9 February.

Despite being mostly set in London, the show was filmed in and around the Bristol area and at the city's The Bottle Yard Studios.

Bottle Yard Studios has hosted a number of high profile films and TV shows in recent years, including Poldark and Broadchurch, and it was at the studios that the Chelsea apartment of Mark Easterbrook was created.

On location, Bristol's Ashton Court Estate and Arnos Cemetery feature prominently, whilst Bristol’s central streets were transformed to create the backdrop of 1960s London.

Bristol’s Denmark Street stands in for 1960s Soho, while West Mall in Clifton Village recreates the King’s Road.

Bristol's Frogmore Street and Cave Street double as the East End, properties overlooking St Nicholas market were brought to life as period police station interiors and Queen’s Square doubles as a Chelsea apartment block.

For the scenes that take place in 'Much Deeping' - a fictional countryside village with strange traditions and a link to Easterbrook’s late first wife - the village of Bisley was used.

The small Gloucestershire settlement is also where you'll find The Pale Horse pub of the programme's title, although in real life it's the The Bear Inn, which is also a four-star hotel.

Further afield, filming took place at Sheldon Hall near Chippenham and the picturesque Chew Valley.

What is The Pale Horse about?

When a murder investigation is launched into the death of a young woman, a mysterious list of names is discovered in her shoe. It prompts an inquiry to not only find the killer but to understand the list of names and what it means.

One of those named is a widowed antique dealer called Mark Easterbrook, who despite having found love again with his new wife Hermia, is still haunted by the tragic death of his first wife Delphine.

Shortly after the discovery of the list is made, Easterbrook begins to investigate how his name came to be on the list.

But the investigation leads him to the peculiar home of a trio of rumoured witches. The rumour surrounding the witches is that they can get rid of rich relatives using supernatural powers.

Despite Easterbrook's scepticism towards the paranormal, he becomes consumed by the increasingly strange and extraordinary things that begin to happen around him.

In a race against time, Easterbrook tries to find a logical explanation and identify the killer before they catch up with him.

The drama has been "modernised" by screenwriter Sarah Phelps who recently defended her decision to alter elements of the novel for the small screen.

“I have changed stuff otherwise you’d have 30 hours of TV and who wants to watch that? I go for the beating heart of what Christie is getting at, through the clues she throws at you," she said.
