Advice for holidaymakers set to travel to Spain has now changed, with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advising against “all but essential international travel.”

Spain was previously exempt from this, with a travel corridor in place allowing visitors there to return to the UK (excluding Scotland) without having to quarantine on their arrival.

However, as the travel corridor is no longer in place for mainland Spain and the Islands, airline Jet2 has taken the decision to suspend all flights to the country, up to and including 16 August.

Why has Jet2 suspended flights to Spain?

The FCO updated its ‘all but essential’ travel advice to include the Balearic and Canary islands on 27 July, after issuing the same guidelines for mainland Spain on 26 July.

Jet2 posted a statement on Twitter explaining its suspension of flights to customers.

The airline said, “Following the latest government advice regarding travel to Mainland Spain from the UK, we have taken the decision to suspend our flights and holidays programme to Costa de Almeria, Alicante, Malaga and Murcia from 28th July up to and including 16th August.

“Customers with inbound flights from Mainland Spain to the UK up until 3rd August will return on their flights as booked. Customers with inbound flights to the UK between 4th-16th August will be contacted to discuss their options.”

‘Don’t go to the airport’

The airline then posted a separate tweet after the advice was changed for the Balearic and Canary Islands, telling customers to not go to the airport on 28 July.

The tweet said, “Following the latest government advice regarding travel to the Balaeric and Canary Islands from the UK, we are advising customers who are due to travel to the following destinations (Tenerife, Fuerterventua, Gran Canaria, Lanzoarote, Majorca, Menorca and Ibiza) not to go to the airport tomorrow (Tuesday 28th July) as we are not operating flights to these destinations.”

This advice also applies to any destinations Jet2 flies to in mainland Spain.

The airline has said it will be contacting holidaymakers who were due to fly out and that they will be offered the option to rebook, credit notes or full cash refunds.

What if I have a flight to Spain booked after 16 August?

Flights are currently suspended until 17 August.

Jet2 said, “For customers who are due to travel to mainland Spain from 17th August onwards, we will provide an additional update once we receive further information from the government.

"We urge the government to provide the industry with clarity, so that we can keep our all-important customers up-to-date and informed.”

The company has thanked customers for their patience and understanding in what is a “fast-moving situation.”
