As hundreds of people across the UK have tested positive for the Covid-19 strain of coronavirus, the country is expected to face the peak of this outbreak within the next few weeks.

This could leave thousands of people self-isolating at home, either to stop the spread of the virus, or to keep themselves safe from it.

Supermarkets have already confirmed that they will ask shoppers if they are self-isolating before they make contact, to ensure both their delivery drivers and customers remain safe.

So what about food deliveries from elsewhere?

Online food delivery apps Just Eat and Deliveroo dominate the food delivery industry. They have both announced so-called 'contactless delivery' for customers during the outbreak.

Pizza chain, Domino's, has now jumped on board. CEO David Wild sent an email to customers explaining the changes to their deliveries.

He wrote, "You can select a Contact Free Delivery at the checkout on our app or website when placing your order. Your driver will call you when they arrive to agree where you want your food left.

"Once the order has been placed in the agreed location, the driver will stay at least two metres away while you collect your order. To ensure the service is truly contact free, all Contact Free Delivery orders must be pre-paid online or over the phone."

Contactless deliveries should be the norm during Covid-19 pandemic

Takeaway.com, a Dutch company that recently bought JustEat, said the measure is applicable to all restaurants on its platform throughout Europe. Drivers are being instructed to ring the customer's doorbell and leave the food at the door.

“Over the last weeks, Takeaway.com provided health and safety instructions to all employees and drivers, and staff members are trained specifically on the correct preventive measures, as well as on how to report a suspicious situation", the company said.
