Ulster University is driving change, uplifting communities and enriching culture in the North West. The university’s partnership with the City of Derry Rugby Club has brought new energy to the City of Derry Rugby summer camps.

Ulster University isn’t just a place of learning it’s a vital part of the city’s heartbeat, believing in the region’s potential and deeply invested in its people.

City of Derry Rugby club convenor Garreth Harvey says: “We’ve run the summer camp at the City of Derry Rugby club for a number of years, but having Ulster University partner with us has been tremendous. Being able to use their branding as we advertise has given us a bit of gravitas. There has been a great buzz in handing out the t-shirts and using the new equipment, and the feedback from the kids has been great.”

At the heart of it all, the kids are developing core skills which will stand them in good stead, in terms of work, relationship building, winning and losing, but ultimately to giving it a try and developing a love of the sport.

The camps have been a triumph with player Ollie, who said he enjoyed learning new skills and making friends during the week.

Local parent Aileen praised the camps, commenting: “It gets them outside, gives them exercise and it helps to learn teamwork, as well as following instructions. It’s just great for them. It’s a really lovely club here as well and great facilities, and the coaches are very good with the children too.”

Coach and parent Stacey-Lea spoke on how partnering with the university can benefit the region.

The amount that’s now available on our doorstep is incredible. Kids don’t have to travel anymore. Let’s stay within our community because we are a great city and use the fantastic facilities that Ulster University provides for us.
