ATHLETICS: Declan Reed retains Glohealth Irish Masters Cross Country Championships title

Declan Reed retained his title at the Glohealth Irish Masters Cross Country Championships at Dundalk IT on Sunday.

The City of Derry athlete who spearheaded the Northern Ireland team at the Greenmount International came home comfortably ahead of Tim Twomey from Leevale with Brian McCloskey of North East third.

Pauric McKinney of Inishowen ran brilliantly to come fourth overall and strike M50 gold ahead of Mick Traynor. Chris McGuinness of Foyle Valley was sixth overall and second at M35 while North Belfast’s Eamon White came tenth overall and had silver at M45.

In the M60 section Gerry O’Doherty of Springwell placed second with Peter Lilburn City of Derry third clubmate Gerry Lynch had gold at M70.

In the Ladies F40 Catriona Devine of Finn Valley was third with Gerrie Short Beechmount fourth while Jackie McMonagle City of Derry came sixth at F45. Another Derry runner Catherine Whoriskey made a tremendous effort to win the intermediate Ladies title leading for most of the way at a blistering pace before dropping to third in the closing stages.

Former multi junior champion Cian O’Reilly from Annalee won the Men’s Intermediate crown with Mark McKinstry North Belfast coming third.
