McCullagh to feature on top Belfast show

Tyrone McCullagh will make his Irish debut in Belfast next month.

The talented southpaw (2-0) has made a blistering start to his pro. career with two consecutive second round KOs during shows in England late last year.

And now fights fans in Derry will get an early opportunity to see the city’s only professional boxer at close quarters when he features on a top class show at the Europa Hotel, Belfast on Saturday, February 6th.

The main event on the night is James Fryers’ clash with Daniel Hughes in a British super-featherweight title eliminator while Paul Hyland Jnr. and James Tennyson are also featured, so it promises to be a special occasion for ‘White Chocolate’ McCullagh.

“I’m delighted it’s at home and it’s a good chance for the home crowd to get behind me,” he said. “I’m looking forward and it should be some atmosphere.

“It will be a new experience being my home debut and there’s a bit of history in the Europa Hotel. I’m really buzzing for it - I can’t wait!”

His promoter, Steve Goodwin stayed true to his word after promising Tyrone a home fight and the Glen Road man is delighted with how his career is going since joining the paid ranks last year.

“Steve Goodwin has 100 per cent lived up to what he promised and he’s flying over for the fight so I can’t ask for any more from him.

“I’m hoping this will be my last four rounder but I’ll have to discuss it with Steve. I’m hoping to move on quickly. So I would like a six rounder after this and then see what happens.

“If I stay injury free I want another four or five fights this year. I need to stay busy and it’s good I get the first one out of the way in February.”

So with four weeks to the fight Tyrone is busy shedding the post Christmas pounds.

“I’ve a bit of weight to shift after Christmas so I’m back on the treadmill,” he smiled. “It won’t take me too long to get back as I did a bit of training over Christmas. It’ll start coming off no problem and this time I have a day before weigh-in which will be a massive help as well.”

McCullagh’s opponent for the February 6th show is Latvian, Zacests (1-1-0), and he believes it will be a step up in class from his last fight.

“I think my opponent will be a step up in class from my first two opponents. No matter who I fight I’ll always be confident of winning if I’m fit and ready but the standard of opponent will probably have to increase gradually.”
