Derry City appoint Mark McChrystal as first team coach

DERRY CITY has appointed experienced defender Mark McChrystal as first team coach ahead of the 2021 SSE Airtricity League campaign.

The 36 years-old remains registered as a player ahead of the new season and will combine his first team duties with his role as the club's Under-13 coach.

McChrystal, who fills the void left by the departure of Marty McCann last month, is delighted to take up the role.

"It's the next move up the ladder," he said. "I'll still play when needed and I still enjoy training but it's a great opportunity for me.

"I'm still going to be doing teh academy coaching and reserves and I've been in and around the first team for the last year and half and so I know what it involves.

"I'll be taking my coaching education to another level by working with Declan (Devine). It's an opportunity I jumped at."

City boss, Devine is delighted to welcome McChrystal on board and insists it was a 'no-brainer' given his passion and experience.

“Mark has played at the top level and brings a wealth of experience to the club” began the City boss.

“He is very highly regarded by players and staff alike and he has been helping me out even during the latter stages of last season.

“Obviously he was heavily involved coaching in the underage set-up so it’s a natural progression to bring him permanently into the first team role.

“Mark has come through the ranks here both as a player and a coach and is currently registered on the pro-licence course.

“He already brings so much to the club with his experience and professionalism and he has a huge future ahead of him in this role.

“I’m delighted to be able to bring in someone of Mark’s calibre and knowing how passionate he is about his work and the club, it was a no-brainer to move him into this role."

Meanwhile Devine confirmed Academy coach Conor Loughrey will also be elevated to teh first team coaching panel for the new season

“We will also be adding Conor Loughrey to the first team coaching panel this season. I have worked with Conor in the International underage set-up in the past and know how good he is.

“Conor will really benefit from this new role and he is someone we’re really looking forward to seeing progress with the extra responsibility."
