Derry City striker Adam Liddle to go head-to-head with Leicester City star James Maddison for NHS charity FIFA tournament

DERRY CITY striker, Adam Liddle is set to go head-to-head with Leicester City's star midfielder James Maddison tonight in the charity FIFA 20 tournament StayInterToto Cup, aimed at raising money for NHS staff.

Liddle, on loan from Reading, has won both of his opening Group D fixtures representing the Candy Stripes to set up a crunch top of the table clash with Leicester City and talented England international, Maddison in the virtual football tournament.

The inaugural event which involves 64 professional footballers and teams from across Europe including Crystal Palace's Andros Townsend, Man City and former Celtic midfielder, Patrick Roberts, Leeds United's Patrick Bamford and Liverpool youngster, Rhian Brewster.

The tournament includes 16 groups of four teams with the live draw conducted by former Stoke City defender, Danny Higginbotham and Arsenal Academy coach and former striker, Jamie Cureton.

Derry City were drawn in Group D alongside, 2015/16 Premiership champions, Leicester City, Stoke City and Scottish club, Livingston.

Liddle made an impressive start to the campaign defeating the SPL outfit 5-0 - a game streamed live on Twitch.

Next up the City striker found himself up against Stoke City's Belgian midfielder, Thibaud Verlinden in what proved to be a thrilling encounter as the Candy Stripes came from 3-1 down to clinch victory with a last minute strike.

That remarkable comeback sets Liddle up with an enticing clash with highly rated England star, Maddison at 9.30p.m. tonight (Thursday) to decide the winners of the group.

All money raised in the tournament is set to support NHS staff who are helping to care for people who are suffering from COVID-19.

The tournament, a throwback to the UEFA Intertoto Cup, was set up by the Leyton Orient media team and is a spin-off of their Ultimate Quaran-Team event which proved highly successful. Liddle had also represented Derry in that but was knocked out in the first round by QPR, losing 2-1.
