The FAI had expelled the club from the League of Ireland for breaking rules by holding dual contracts with players but it was re-formed and re-admitted to the First Division in March 2010 as the association offered a lifeline. Stephen Kenny opted to remain at the helm but was faced with his biggest challenge, hastily assembling a squad made up of local players as the Candy Stripes rose from the ashes.
We've taken a look at where the 11 players who started that game against Cork are now, a decade later. Of course Eugene Ferry, Seamus Sharkey, Stephen Parkhouse, Darren Cassidy, David McDaid were all on the bench that day while Patrick McEleney proved a key member of that title winning team.
9. Barry Molloy
Molloy spent 10 seasons at Derry and captained the team. He won the FAI Cup in 2012. He played 326 times for Derry before joining Crusaders in after the FAI Cup Final in 2014 and finished his career at Finn Harps.
10. James McClean
Emerged as one of the clubs top performers in 2011 before earning a move to Premiership club, Sunderland for 350,000. He went on to represent Wigan, West Brom and is currently at Stoke City. He has 74 caps for Ireland.
11. Vincent Sweeney
The former Cliftonville striker left Derry City in mid-season after falling out of favour with Stephen Kenny. Now a personal fitness trainer and gym owner in Derry.
12. Mark Farren
Finished the First Divisions top scorer in 2010. Went on to become Derry's all-time top scorer with 114 goals. He left the club for Glenavon in 2013 and sadly passed away in February 2016. No. 18 jersey retired in his honour.
