And over the past few months we’ve asked ‘Journal’ readers to select Derry City’s Team of the Decade, voting for YOUR favourite players to have donned the red and white Candy Stripes over the last decade, from 2010 to 2020!
We put forward candidates for goalkeepers, central defenders, full-backs, midfielders, wingers and strikers in an attempt to assemble the best team in a traditional 4-4-2 formation.
The players were to be judged on achievements and overall quality when representing Derry City. Over 2,000 voted on the various polls and the following line-up of 11 players, came out on top with five named as substitutes. Let us know if you agree.
1. Gerard Doherty
A former club captain, the Creggan man played more than 400 games for Derry during his second, 10-year spell at the Brandywell club.
2. Eddie McCallion
The right-back played over 500 competitive games for Derry in a distinguished career on Foyleside, picking up two FAI Cup winners' medals along the way. While his career highlights will no doubt have come in the previous decade, he was still a key member of the 2010 side which clinched promotion.
3. Stuart Greacen
Greacen enjoyed two spells at Brandywell, lifting the League Cup in 2011 and the FAI Cup in 2012. Signed by Stephen Kenny in 2011, the former Greenock Morton man was voted by Derry City supporters as their best player of that campaign.
4. Ryan McBride
The late Bluebell Hill Gardens native was appointed captain of his hometown club in January 2015. Joined Derry in 2011 and the following year he was part of the team which won the FAI Cup. He made more than 100 appearances. The club retired the No.5 shirt in his honour.
