Former Derry City coach Gary Duffy appointed Buncrana Hearts manager

FORMER Derry City youth coach, Gary Duffy has been appointed first team manager of Buncrana Hearts Football Club.

The Inishowen League outfit announced his appointment tonight (Sunday), declaring the ex-Candy Stripes coach was the 'outstanding candidate' for the post.

Duffy, who helped coach the likes of Portsmouth and Ireland striker Ronan Curtis, Shrewsbury Town's Josh Daniels and Walsall's Rory Holden during his time at Brandywell, has a wealth of experience in the game.

And Buncrana Hearts were delighted to offer him the position of first team boss.

"Gary proved to be the outstanding candidate for the job and the committee were very impressed with his plans for the Hearts going forward," said a club spokesperson.

"Gary has spent his entire playing career with the club making his debut at the age of 16 in the Ulster Senior League.

"Gary has a wealth of coaching experience behind him having spent five years coaching Derry City U17s in the FAI National League, helping to produce players of the calibre of Georgie Kelly, Ronan Curtis, Rory Holden and Joshua Daniels,

"Gary has also coached the Inishowen League U18s and stepped in as caretaker manager of the Hearts following the departure of Phil Brady before handing the reins over to Stephen Parkhouse back in 2016."

Duffy hasn't wasted any time since his appointment and has been busy meeting with his first team panel in recent days.

"Although Gary's appointment was only made official on Sunday he has been busy meeting the

current Senior squad individually over the past number of days, seeking commitment and also met as a group via zoom on Thursday night.

"Gary has also spoken to a few people with a view to signing with the club but was not in a position to confirm whether they would be coming on board.

"Gary is also in the process of assembling his backroom staff and was delighted to confirm that Peter Gallagher will be looking after the Strength and Conditioning with the players beginning their own individual programmes on Monday.

"Dermot Brown will work with our goalkeepers, a role he had just begun with previous manager Srephen McNutt."
