Former Derry City man Jamie McDonagh wins Goal of the Month

Ex-Derry City winger Jamie McDonagh has picked up the Northern Ireland Football Writers' Association’s Goal of the Month for February.

McDonagh’s spectacular 89th minute winner over Cliftonville, gave title chasing Glentoran a massive boost and kick started their recent run of form.

The 24-year-old’s late winner against the Reds set the Glens off on an impressive run which has seen them secure six victories on the bounce and which has taken them to just nine points behind leaders, Linfield, having played two games less than their Belfast rivals.

That 1-0 win over Paddy McLaughlin’s men also resulted in the Oval side coincided with the Glens beginning to keep clean-sheets and they have only conceded two goals during their recent winning streak. Despite not featuring regularly for the Glens, McDonagh could prove a big player in the season run-in as boss Mick McDermott is likely to use most of his squad as the title race starts to hot-up in their remaining 13 games.
