“I think people took notice of Jack after scoring a stunning goal against Sligo last year and he worked really hard to keep his place throughout," said the City manager.

“He then had an injury (fractured foot) that kept him out for a couple of months but he is back and raring to go.

“We have excellent options in midfield at the minute and it says a lot about Jack’s progress that he is right in the mix for us.

“I’m delighted he has committed his future to Derry City."

And Top of the Hill native, Malone said the management team’s confidence in him was a driving factor.

“Declan, Kevin, Paddy and Marty have been brilliant with me since I came into the senior squad and that trust gives you real belief as a player.

“I’m really motivated and want to be part of the team that brings the club to where they belong. We want to be challenging and trying to win trophies.

"I had just started to be a regular in the side last year before I broke my foot but I’m fully fit now and ready to go.

“We have seven quality midfielders in the squad now- any of them worthy of a place tomorrow night- so competition will be fierce.

"That will help us all to be on top of our game so it’s not a bad thing. We really can’t wait to get going tomorrow.”
