Derry City's high profile loan signing from Manchester City, midfielder Joe Hodge is set to miss the start of the SSE Airtricity League season through injury.

The 18 year-old Republic of Ireland underage international sustained a back injury in training and is expected to be ruled out for up to four weeks.

As the club await the results of a scan, it's unclear whether the Manchester native will return to his parent club for treatment or remain on Foyleside. He's currently on a six month loan from the English Premier League leaders.

The news comes as a major blow to Declan Devine's preparations for the new season but he'll be hopeful the player will be back in action as soon as possible.

The Candy Stripes, who play Finn Harps in a training match tonight at Brandywell, begin their league campaign with a trip to Premier Division newcomers Longford Town on March 20th next.
