The Brandywell club had offered the 26 year-old Derry man a contract at the end of the 2020 season while there was also interest from league champions, Shamrock Rovers.

Several English clubs including Shrewsbury Town and Peterborough had shown interest in recent weeks and Duffy had declared his intentions to test himself in English football to boost his chances of breaking into the Republic of Ireland senior squad.

However, the Galliagh native opted to remain in the League of Ireland and favoured staying with the Lilywhites rather than returning to Brandywell or making the switch to champions, Shamrock Rovers and he's 'delighted' to finally get the deal done.

Duffy has won two SSE Airtricity League titles, two FAI Cups, two League Cups and the Unite The Union Champions Cup during his time at Oriel Park.

He also played a significant role in helping guide Dundalk to the Group Stages of the 2020 UEFA Europa League and Duffy believes he's made the 'right choice' in remaining at the Co. Louth side.

“I’m delighted it’s done and I’d like to thank MLS Management for getting it over the line,” said Duffy.

“I can look forward to the season ahead now. It was a big decision but I think I’ve made the right choice staying with Dundalk and I can’t wait to get back on the pitch.

“We finished 2020 on a high by winning the FAI Cup and that was a big factor in my decision.

"There were a few months last year when things weren’t good at Oriel Park but some of my best memories from being at the club came from the way we finished the season and that’s what I want again.”

Dundalk Sporting Director, Jim Magilton worked with Duffy in the Northern Ireland underage set-up and said he made the Derry man one of his top priorities since taking up his post.

“I have known Michael for some time and I have always been well aware of his qualities so retaining his services was one of my top priorities when I arrived at Dundalk and I’m delighted that he has signed for next season,” said Magilton.

“I’d like to thank the board of directors, club chairman Bill Hulsizer – who pushed it over the line – and Michael’s agent, Liam Nelis for getting the deal done. It’s great news for our supporters – and there’s more to come.”
