The talented wideman has been involved in relegation scraps during his time with Wolves and Barnsley in the past and insists no team can consider themselves ‘too good to go down’.

Derry go into tonight’s final home game of the season third from bottom but knowing a win against Shelbourne will all but end any talk of a potential relegation battle .

Declan Devine’s team were unfortunate not to get something from Monday’s home clash with Dundalk but Hammill claims the Candy Stripes must show their desire and get a result against the Dubliners.

“We’ve got to show our character now,” said the Liverpudlian who produced one of his best displays since arriving on Foyleside against Dundalk.

“We’ve got to come to the party and show that, as players, we’re capable of pushing up the table.

“We have to show we’re capable of getting on the ball under pressure, creating chances.

“This is where you see who wants to play, who has got ambitions, not necessarily for this season but also for the next.

“Who wants to be here and showcase what they’re about.

“I’ve no doubt that every single player in that dressing room is hurting and we’re better than the league table suggests.

“We’ve got to go out there and prove that.”

“I’ve been involved in teams where people have said we were too good to go down and we’ve been relegated. We can’t go into games with that mentality.

“We can’t feel sorry for ourselves. We have to go out and grasp it now.

“We’re in the predicament we’re in and we’ve got to accept that and make sure we finish with as many wins as we can and go as far in the cup as we can.”
