Roddy Collins Jr released from Derry City

Roddy Collins Jr., pictured with Dundalk's Mark Griffin last Tuesday night, appears to have played his last game for Derry City.

DERRY CITY football club have released Roddy Collins Jr. from his contract following tonight’s heavy defeat to St Patrick’s Athletic at Richmond Park it’s understood.

The 19 year-old right-back is the third player to leave the Brandywell club this week, following swiftly in the footsteps of Mark Stewart and Enda Curran who had their one year deals cut short on Tuesday night.

The defender, who was brought to the club by his father, ex-Derry City boss, Roddy Collins, was an unused substitute in the 5-2 defeat to the reigning champions tonight.

And while the Dubliner had started the opening 13 games in all competitions under his father’s reign, he was promptly dropped to the bench for new boss Peter Hutton’s first game in charge in Cork.

Collins Jr. made just one start for Hutton, in the 1-2 EA Sports Cup quarter-final loss to Dundalk last Tuesday night.

With Shane McEleney and Dean Jarvis brought back in from the cold in recent games, Collins was clearly not in Hutton’s long term plans.

Prior to the trip to Dublin, Hutton had declared there would be no one else leaving the club unless they were unhappy and request a move away.

And while it’s not yet fully clear the circumstances behind Collins; departure, the Dubliner has certainly played his final game in the red and white ‘Candy Stripes’.
