Stephen Kenny to talk to Derry youngsters on special 'Mind Yer Head' video call

REPUBLIC of Ireland manager Stephen Kenny will join Derry youngsters on a special video call to discuss the highs and lows of his career as part of the Ryan McBride Foundation's 'Mind Yer Head' mentor scheme.

The Dubliner, who is an ambassador for the Foundation set up in honour of the late Derry City skipper, Ryan McBride, kickstarts the 12 week educational programme tomorrow (Thursday) at 7p.m.

Kenny will join 16-20 year-olds from Brandywell, Bishop Street, Bogside and Creggan areas of the city on Zoom in an introductory session to talk about his career, how he managed to overcome adversity and develop resilience over the years.

The Ireland boss is the first of several mentors who have signed up to share their experiences on the scheme which deals with a range of social issues, ranging from disappointments in careers to addiction and how to overcome problems and better yourselves and others.

GAA All-Star and multiple All Ireland winner, Oisin McConville, ex-Manchester United and Northern Ireland star, Pat Gibbon and former Liverpool youth and Derry City winger, Sean Friars will also share their inspiring stories with the group over the course of the 12 weeks.

Limited places are still available for the scheme which has been kindly funded by Derry City & Strabane District Council Community Support Programme.

Anyone that signs up and completes the 'Mind Yer Head' mentoring programme will be offered a free place on the Ryan McBride Foundation Irish FA Grassroots Introduction Coaching Award, with a chance of further progression.

The 'Mind Yer Head' programme is a 12 week course (one hour per week) aimed at any 16-20 year olds within the city, anyone that has experienced or experiencing issues with mental health, addiction, dealing with disappointment, feeling low in life or if you have a friend or family member experiencing these issues you are more than welcome to sign up.

The 12 week program designed to: Support - through educational talks from people who have experienced low points in life ranging from disappointment in careers to addiction and how they have overcome issues to better themselves and others.

Assist - Building networks and experience to help deal with issues that may develop or have developed to you, a friend or a family member that may need your assistance.

Inspire - With motivational talks to help build a foundation and platform to better yourself or someone in your life that needs your help.
