Harland & Wolff Welders 0, Institute 2

Institute deservedly got back to winning ways with this fantastic win at Harland & Wolff Welders.

Goals from Michael McCrudden and Gareth Brown ensured Kevin Deery’s side bounced back from their defeat against leaders Warrenpoint Town last time out.

Winger Jamie McIntyre produced some terrific skill to be brought down for McCrudden’s penalty but it was his overall display, which tormented the Welders defence all afternoon.

Another pleasing aspect for the Waterside men was that they kept a clean-sheet, their first in a number of weeks.

The Belfast men had the first chance after just two minutes when Danny McKee, got in behind Ryan Morrow but the striker’s drive from just inside the left hand side of the box was well saved by ‘Stute keeper Marty Gallagher.

A superb through ball by McIntyre then released Stephen Curry but after racing clear of the Welders defence, the winger saw his close range strike saved by Welders net-minder Samuel Johnston.

On the half-hour mark McKee again got in down the left hand side of the ‘Stute defence and his cut-back found David Rainey at the near post but the ex-Crusaders made side-footed wide.

The deadlock was broken eight minutes later as McIntyre was upended inside the box by William Armstrong and McCrudden made no mistake with the resulting spot-kick, firing low into the keeper’s left hand side.

Just before the break a slick counter attack ended with a clever pass by Aaron Harkin releasing McIntyre but his 20 yard drive was saved by Johnston.

Institute should have added a second on 54 minutes when Stephen Curry ghosted in behind the Welders defence, but with his weaker left foot, he failed to trouble Johnston and fired wide.

Two minutes later the visitors continued to push forward as Ryan Morrow moved up from left-back but his stinging drive from just inside the box, flashed just past Johnston’s left hand post.

Institute ended the game as a contest on 66 minutes when they deservedly added a second goal.

An excellent pass by Stephen Curry released McCrudden, who broke the offside trap but his curling effort from 10 yards was kept out by Johnston only for the alert Gareth Brown to turn home the loose ball.
