Gerrard, who announced he would be leaving American M.L.S. side, L.A. Galaxy, at the weekend, had been linked with a move to Parkhead club on Monday.

Gerrard captained Liverpool F.C. when Rodgers was manager from 2012 to 2015.

“Players coming into the club I never speculate on or speak about,” said Rodgers. “With regards to Steven, he’s been an incredible player.

“I had a number of years with him at Liverpool when he was absolutely brilliant for me. As a young manager going into such a great club and having the captain and real senior player there, to be able to work closely with him, learn about the club and work together on the field was fantastic.

“But in terms of the speculation, I’m not sure where it’s come from. Players coming into the club will remain private.”

Rodgers added: “[Coaching] is something I’m sure he would want to do. Back [at Liverpool], him and Kolo Toure were doing their B Licence coaching badges - I know that Kolo has just passed his, which is great for him - but they were both great warriors and players.

“I’m sure if they want to stay in the game beyond the playing side then the coaching element is something they’ll look to.

“Steven certainly had those qualities, but it’s what you then want to do with that, being a coach or a manager is hard work.

“If you want to make it your profession then there’s a lot of study and work that needs to go into it. If it’s something he wants to do, then he has the experience to hopefully go and do that.”
