"We had a lot of positives and the character of the players were magnificent, the work ethic from the players was magnificent, but it's just the start and we have to keep working and we have to keep getting better.

"The one thing I have to say is that this group of players are a good bunch and I have been saying that for weeks, but they are a good honest bunch and I think when they start believing in each other, I think we'll continue to strive to get better."

Devine was also full of praise for winger Stephen Mallon, who's opening goal was a stunning finish, and praised the Ireland U21 international's attitude.

"Stephen is a very talented boy and the reason we brought him here was that natural ability to go past people," he added.

"I'm delighted for him tonight, because he has had to wait his time. He has come on as a sub in two successive games, but the way he has trained over the last week or two has been magnificent and I'm delighted he has got his rewards tonight, because he's a real good lad."
