Freddy Eyes Waterside Half Marathon

Looking ahead to the blue riband road race of the North West, the Waterside Half Marathon and Catherine Whoriskey certainly will be on the start line and gunning for a successful title defence on Sunday, September 4th.

The well known Kenyan Freddy Sittuk, runner up last year to Mick Clohissey who is currently in Rio preparing for the Olympic marathon, is back in Ireland and has been racing on both road and track recently.

He has indicated he intends to be on the Waterside start line again this year and had a busy weekend. He won a close fought Carlingford 5k on Friday night, posting 14m 45s to just about see off Glasslough’s Connor Duffy and 2015 Dessie’s Run winner, Paddy Hamilton.

Sittuk then turned out for his adopted club, Raheny Shamrock, in Sunday’s National Track & Field League final in Tullamore, winning both the 5,000m and 3K Steeplechase.

Entries for the Waterside have a first closing date of Monday, August 15th and with time running out it would be advisable to get online now at www.derrystrabane.com and get your entry sorted. Alternatively paper entries are being taken at Templemore Sports Complex, the Foyle Arena and Strabane’s Riversdale Sports Centre.
