Derry County Chairman pays tribute to “historic” Oak hurlers after Christy Ring success

County Chairman John Keenan has paid a heartfelt tribute to manager Johnny McGarvey and his historic Derry hurling panel after a Christy Ring Cup success which Mr Keenan said will be "remembered for generations".

The 3-24 to 2-19 over hot favourites Kerry secured Derry it's first ever Christy Ring success after more than 20 years of competing and having lost four of the last five finals. McGarvey was in charge for three of those heartbreaking final defeats (Meath - 2023, Kildare - 2024 and London - 2025) and despite dealing with an annual player turnover that has seen him use 70 players across his four seasons - handing out a remarkable 41 debuts to boot - the Lavey native refused to be bowed.

This season again, with the the inclusion of Joe McDonagh regulars, Kerry, the fates appeared to have conspired against McGarvey, especially when Derry's league season started with a 0-12 to 5-23 home defeat to 'The Kingdom' who were installed as the hottest of favourites for championship glory.

But never tell an Oak Leaf hurler he can't achieve something and with few outside the panel offering any hope, Derry hurlers did what Derry hurlers do and upset the odds secure a victory which formed part of a remarkable Derry hat-trick of hurling titles alongside the All Ireland U20 B title and the weekend's Corn William Robinson Celtic Challenge victory over Mayo.

"On behalf of Derry GAA, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to our senior hurlers on their magnificent achievement in winning the Christy Ring Cup for the first time in our county’s history," said the County Chairman

"This was a landmark day for Derry hurling and a moment that will be remembered for generations. The dedication, commitment and belief shown by this group of players throughout the season have been exceptional, and they have now earned their place in the history books. Special tribute must be paid to manager Johnny McGarvey and his management team, whose leadership, vision and tireless work have guided this team to unprecedented success. Their commitment to developing and promoting hurling in Derry has been rewarded in the most fitting manner.

I also want to congratulate our captain, Cormac O’Doherty, who has led this team with distinction, pride and determination. His leadership, both on and off the field has been exemplary and he has been a tremendous ambassador for Derry GAA."

The County Chairman said the Croke Park win represents an important step in the development of hurling within the county after it secured Derry a first ever appearance in the Joe McDonagh Cup for next season.

"This victory belongs not only to the players and management but also to the families, clubs, volunteers and supporters across the county who have backed this team every step of the way," added Mr Keenan, "The scenes of celebration witnessed following the final reflected the passion and pride that hurling inspires throughout Derry. "Winning the Christy Ring Cup is a tremendous achievement in itself, but it also represents another important step in the continued growth and development of hurling within our county. We hope this success will inspire the next generation of young hurlers to dream big and follow in the footsteps of these outstanding role models.

"Today, we celebrate a truly historic achievement. Derry can be immensely proud of this team and all they have accomplished. Congratulations to Johnny, Cormac, the players, management team and everyone associated with Derry hurling on bringing the Christy Ring Cup home for the very first time."
