Greencastle’s greenkeepers had obviously been paying close attention to the recent Masters at Augusta National and this was reflected in some very tough pin placements over the past weekend.

The net result was that competitors found scoring to be very difficult on both Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday’s Open was won by the consistent Brendan Deehan who had two points to spare over Hon. Secretary Danny Lynch and Damien Martin.

Sisters Marian Devlin and Anne Heard took the Ladies prizes.

Full results were: Saturday, April 16th - Ladies and Gents Open: 1, Brendan Deehan (17) 38pts; 2, Danny Lynch (25) 36; 3, Damien Martin (23) 36; Gross, Eddie McIntye (8) 27; 1st 9, Seamus Hegarty (19) 21; 2nd 9, Gavin Gallagher (13) 19; Ladies: 1, Marian Devlin (13) 32; 2, Anne Heard (25) 31.

There was a great turnout for the Ferguson Fashions Stroke event on Sunday, always one of the most keenly contested competitions on the Greencastle calendar.

Tony Carlin had just missed out on the previous weekend when beaten to the main prize by his brother-in-law, but demonstrated great character by taking the honours this time around.

His round was almost derailed by a 7 at the 10th but a birdie at the ‘Lighthouse’ got him back on track and he went on to score a net 66 for the winning score.

Phelim O’Neill took the runner-up position with Jason McLaughlin having the best Gross score on 75.

Full results were: Sunday, April 17th - Ferguson Fashions Confined Stroke: 1, Tony Carlin (13) 66pts; 2, Phelim O’Neill (18) 67; Gross, Jason McLaughlin (5) 75; 3, Martin McGeoghan (19) 67; 4, John McDermott (20) 68; 1st 9, Mark Tracey (14) 31; 2nd 9, Maeliosa Barr (21) 31.5.
