Abuse of workers needs to stop: Logue

Sinn Féin Councillor Patricia Logue has appealed for the abuse of workers in the retail and hospitality sectors trying to implement COVID-19 safety measures to stop.

She said reports from trade unions that workers were being attacked for trying to do their jobs were deeply concerning.

“It is very worrying to hear reports from unions who represent workers in the retail and hospitality sectors that they are now becoming targets for both physical and verbal abuse as they are trying to implement COVID-19 safety measures,” said Colr. Logue.

The minority of abusive customers need to wise-up and desist from such unacceptable and possibly criminal behaviour, she aid.

“The whole situation around COVID-19 is very stressful for everyone, none more so than for these workers.

“They are trying to keep businesses open and provide, in many cases, a vital service in communities.

“And the last thing we want to see is them being subject to this type of abuse just for asking someone to stay a few metres apart in a queue or wear a face mask.

“We need to support these workers in trying to keep everyone safe and playing a part in fighting this terrible virus,” she urged.
