An Bhfuil Gaeilge Agat? - Raidió na Gaeltachta

This week, our columnist looks at the anniversary of Raidió na Gaeltachta.

Raidió na Gaeltachta

Is breá linn comóradh anseo in Éirinn. Bhuel, tá comóradh an-tábhachtach ann an tseachtain seo do mhuintir na hÉireann agus do Ghaeilgeoirí go háirithe. Bunaíodh Raidió na Gaeltachta ar an 2 Aibreán 1952 mar chuid de Radio Telefís Éireann.(Sin an t-ainm a tugadh ar RTÉ ag an am.

Ní dóígh liom go raibh a lán stáisiún ann nach raibh ábalta a n-ainm a litriú go ceart.

Bhí ‘Telefón’ scríofa ar na boscaí teileafóin chomh maith- easpa measa ar fad). Bunaíodh Radio Éireann sa bhliain 1926.

Ar feadh blianta fada ní raibh an tseirbhís thar mholadh beirte. Ní raibh an comhartha láidir. Ní raibh tú ábalta éisteacht leis an tseirbhís i gcuid mhaith den tír. San oíche bhí sé dodhéanta éisteacht leis na cláracha mar gheall ar stáisiúin eachtrannacha thart timpeall. Stop craolachán cúpla uair a chlog san iarnóin.

Agus bhí fíorbheagán Gaeilge le cluinstin. Rinne Gael-Linn urraíocht ar chúpla clár Gaeilge sa tseachtain ach ní raibh mórán eile ann.

Ach d’imigh sin agus tháinig seo. Is féidir leat éisteacht le Raidió na Gaeltachta ar fud na cruinne anois ó mhaidin go hoíche. Is áis iontach é go háirithe dóibh siúd atá ag foghlaim na teanga thar lear.

Tugann an tseirbhís fostaíocht do láithreoirí agus do cheoltóirí óga- agus do cheoltóirí níos sine!

Níos mó ná rud ar bith eile,is seirbhís phobail é Rna G. Tarraingíonn sé daoine le chéile. Go minic is comharsana iad na daoine atá páirteach sna cláracha. Cothaíonn sé spiorad an phobail

Spreag Raidió na Gaeltachta stáisiúin raidió in áiteanna eile. Anois tá Raidió na Life againn i mBaile Átha Cliath agus Raidió Fáilte i mBéal Feirste. Mar sin de, comhghairdeas le Raidió na Gaeltachta - ba chóir do gach Éireannach bheith bródúil as.

Raidió na Gaeltachta

We love anniversaries here in Ireland. Well, Irish people and Irish speakers especially have an important anniversary this week. Raidió na Gaeltachta was officially established on 2 April 1952 as part of Radio Telefís Éireann.(That is the name that was given to RTÉ at the time. I don’t think there were many stations that were unable to spell their name properly. ‘Telefón’ was written on the phone boxes as well- a complete lack of respect.) ‘Radio Éireann’ as founded in 1926. For many long years the service was very poor.

The signal was not strong. You could not listen to the service in a good part of the country. At night listening to the programmes was impossible because of foreign stations round about.

Broadcasting stopped for a few hours in the afternoon. And there was very little of the Irish language to be heard. Gael-Linn sponsored a couple of programmes every week, but there was not much else.

But things have changed. You can listen to Raidió na Gaeltachta anywhere in the world from morning till night. It is a marvellous resource, especially for those learning the language overseas.

The service gives employment to presenters and musicians - young and old. More than anything else, RnaG is a community service. It brings people together.

Often it is neighbours who are taking part in the programmes. It fosters community spirit.

Raidió naGaeltachta has inspired people to set up radio stations in other parts. Now we have Raidió na Life in Dublin and Raidió Fáilte in Belfast. So Raidió na Gaeltachta deserves our congratulations. Every Irish person should be proud of it.
