The GOAL Mile is an annual event and normally sees people gathering to walk together on St Stephen’s Day.

This year however things will be different but people can still keep up the tradition by taking on their own GOAL Mile in December.

Among those who have already completed the challenge are pupils from Nazareth House Primary School, who have raised an impressive £560 for GOAL during December by taking part in class bubble walks.

GOAL is an international humanitarian response agency established in Ireland over 40 years ago.

Sister Bernardine, former principal of Nazareth House Primary School, organised the first GOAL Mile walk in Derry back in 2004.

Following her retirement and return to her native Sligo, local GP, Dr Lee Casey decided to keep the walk going.

A spokesperson for the local organisers said: “This year, because of COVID restrictions, there will not be the traditional GOAL Mile in Derry on Boxing Day but people are encouraged to do a ‘Martini style socially distanced’ walk (anytime, any place, any where’ instead).”
