368 people left Altnagelvin A&E before treatment
Over 350 people left the Altnagelvin A&E last month before their treatment was completed, new statistics have shown.
Of 5,003 people who visited the Type 1 Emergency Department in Derry 368 people (7.4%) left the facility before treatment in September 2026. That’s a 29% year-on-year increase from 238 people in September 2025.
During September, just 2.7% (134 attendances) of all ED attendances at Altnagelvin were unplanned review attendances who had returned to the same ED within 7 days for the same condition. This was both the lowest percentage rate and the lowest number of attendances recorded at any ED.
More than one in six (16.3%) attendances at the Altnagelvin ED in September were referred by a GP, compared with 15.4% in September 2025. A total of 811 attendances were referred by local GPs in Derry last month. This was the fifth highest number of referrals in the North after Antrim (1,843), Ulster (1,322), Royal Victoria (1,318) and Craigavon (856).
