Derry woman takes on 500-mile challenge in memory of those affected by skin cancer
A Derry woman is putting her love of walking to the ultimate test this September, taking on an incredible 500-mile challenge to raise £1,000 for the Fiona Brady Foundation.
Laura Doherty, mum to Darragh and fiancée to Jason, has always been an active person. Walking has been a huge part of her life for as long as she can remember, and when she isn’t out walking, she enjoys spending time with her horses. Laura has always loved a challenge, but for her, the most rewarding challenges are those that allow her to give something back and help others.
In 2025, Tamnaherin woman Laura joined the walking challenge group Diet Starts Monday, taking part in monthly challenges which gave her even more motivation and determination to keep walking. But Laura had always wanted to do a walking challenge that could make a real difference to someone else. That opportunity came unexpectedly when Laura won a skin cancer awareness hamper at work, which had been kindly gifted by the Fiona Brady Foundation.
Receiving the hamper immediately inspired Laura to find a way to support the charity in return. “As soon as I got the news, I automatically wanted to give something back to this great charity,” Laura said.

Her goal is to raise £1,000, but Laura is hoping that with the support of family, friends and the wider community, she can go beyond that target.
The challenge is not simply about reaching 500 miles it is about raising awareness, bringing people together and supporting a foundation which does so much for those affected by skin cancer.
“I’m ever so grateful for everyone who has sponsored me and encouraged me along the way,” Laura said. “I really hope we can do our best to raise as much money as possible for such a wonderful foundation.”
The challenge will undoubtedly test Laura’s determination, but she is no stranger to pushing herself. With her passion for walking and the support of those around her, she is ready to put one foot in front of the other and take on the 500-mile challenge. Laura is now calling on the people of Tamnaherin and beyond to get behind her, whether through sponsorship, encouragement or simply sharing her fundraising journey.

Every donation, no matter how small, will help Laura get closer to her £1,000 target, and every mile walked will be another step towards helping the Fiona Brady Foundation continue its important work.
The Fiona Brady Foundation was established in memory of local Derry girl Fiona Brady, who sadly passed away from skin cancer in January 2024, aged just 36. Officially active since May 1, 2026, the Foundation has already been out in shopping centres, community settings and public events across Northern Ireland, raising awareness of skin cancer, promoting sun safety and encouraging people to take steps towards early detection.
A spokesperson said: “As a young charity, we are incredibly grateful for the support we have received from communities across Northern Ireland as we continue Fiona’s legacy and work to help prevent other families from experiencing the loss that ours has endured.”
To support Laura’s 500-mile challenge, donations can be made through the Foundation’s website at www.fbfoundation.co.uk,or the Facebook page, The Fiona Brady Foundation, or Instagram, @thefbfoundation.co.uk.
Donations can also be made directly through the challenge’s GoFundMe page.
