Derry/Strabane COVID-19 rate falls to lowest level since second wave spiralled in September

The seven-day coronavirus rate per 100,000 has fallen to its lowest point in Derry and Strabane since the beginning of the second wave in September when the virus first started to spiral out of control locally.

The district continues to post the lowest SARS-CoV-2 prevalence rate in the whole of the north and one of lowest rates in the whole country.

Data released by the Department of Health today show that between January 14 and January 20, there were 238 confirmed positive cases of the virus in the district giving a seven day rate per 100,000 of 158, down from 165.9 on Wednesday.

This is the lowest seven day rate of the illness recorded in Derry and Strabane in four months. The last time a lower figure was recorded was on September 23 when the rate was 122.1 per 100,000.

Although the level of the virus reduced after the second wave of the health emergency when Derry and Strabane had the highest prevalence of the illness in Europe at one point it never fell below the rate of 165.3 per 100,000 that was recorded on December 16.

Derry and Strabane is still recording the lowest coronavirus rate in the six counties after Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon (552.7), Mid Ulster (445.4), Newry, Mourne and Down (346.3), Antrim and Newtownabbey (273.4), Fermanagh and Omagh (261.1), Mid and East Antrim (240.3), Belfast (235.6), Lisburn and Castlereagh (192.9), Ards and North Down (177.2) and Causeway Coast and Glens (171.2).

The average prevalence rate for the north over the same seven day period was 295.6 per 100,000 - lower than the figure of 313.2 posted yesterday.
