Basque separatists paint Free Derry tribute in autonomous commune in country's capital

Basque separatists have paid homage to Free Derry Corner in an autonomous commune on the outskirts of the country's capital Vitoria-Gasteiz.

A mural with the slogan 'You Are Now Entering Free Errekaleor' has been painted on a gable wall in the self-governing community.

It's among a series of murals in the commune which has been occupied by squatters since 2013.

Former Sinn Féin MLA Maeve McLaughlin commented: "And yet again our place transcends! International solidarity."

Aidrean Ó Gallchobhair, an Ógra Shinn Féin member, stated: "Basque activists took an abandoned neighbourhood called Errekaleor and transformed it into a self governing community to meet their social needs. But here is an interesting mural that they have painted. The friendship between Ireland and Euskal Herria will always remain strong."
