29.4 million euro investment in Donegal public nursing homes

A €29.14 million investment in Donegal public nursing homes have been announced, with Carndonagh Community Hospital and Buncrana Community Nursing Unit on the list.

Carndonagh Community Hospital is to receive 2.6 million euro and Buncrana Nursing Unit has been granted 2.97 million euro.

As a result of this investment, it is intended that all public nursing homes will be compliany with the environmental aspects of HIQA standards by 2021.

The remaining residential care units included in the Capital Plan 2016-2020 are Killybegs which will receive €440,000; Falcarragh Community Hospital which has been granted €2.82 million; Dungloe Community Hospital at which there will be a €2.61 million investment and Ballyshannon is to receive €17.4million euro.

The news has been welcomed by Donegal North East TD, Minister Joe McHugh who said it was “one of the most comprehensive programmes of investment in public nursing home facilities in the history of the State and is extremely positive for Donegal.”

Letterkenny Community Nursing Unit is to receive €300,000 through the plan, as well as an additional €22.75M through public private partnerships (PPP) or alternative funding arrangements to be considered.

Minister McHugh added: “This very significant investment reflects this Government’s determination to maintain the current public nursing home bed stock. As a result of this investment, it is intended that all public nursing homes will be compliant with the environmental aspects of HIQA standards by 2021.

“I know that residents and their families attest to the excellence of the care received but the physical environment needs improvement. It is reassuring for those living in these homes, their families and communities throughout the country that the future of these public nursing homes has now been secured as a result of this investment.”
