Denies attending Syrian training camp

A barrister acting for a man accused of attending a training camp in Syria has said '˜there is one rule for English men and another rule for a wee boy from the Bog'.

Defence QC Brian McCartney made the comment as 27-year-old Eamon Bradley appeared at Derry Crown Court.

The barrister told the court there will be an application to stay the proceedings against his client because there were a number of similar cases in England where a decision was taken not to proceed with the prosecution.

Bradley, whose address was given on court papers as Benview Estate, Coshquin, denies attending a place for terrorist training in Syria.

The defendant further denied charges of receiving training in the use of weapons for terrorism.

He also pleaded not guilty to possessing explosives, namely grenades, with intent to endanger life between March 2014 and October 2014.

Junior defence barrister Joe Brolly said it would be an ‘affront to justice’ to allow Bradley to be prosecuted in circumstances where the British Government was engaged in a ‘collective act of self defence against ISIL’.

He added that the British Government was involved in a coalition with among others Saudi Arabia, which has ‘trained and armed the group this man is associated with’.

Bradley was released on continuing bail to appear in court again on April 29 for hearing dates to be fixed.
