Disorderly and assault accused refused bail

Barry Gordon Whittle, of Clareen Drive, is charged with disorderly behaviour on licensed premises on March 14.

He is also accused of causing grievous bodily harm to a man in November, last year.

Derry Magistrate’s Court heard the 34-year-old was on bail for the serious assault, when he allegedly got involved in an altercation at The Belfray Inn after his mother’s funeral.

As part of his bail conditions he was banned from consuming alcohol and entering licensed premises.

It is alleged he injured a member of the public and had an altercation with his stepfather.

However, the court neither of these people have made a complaint to police.

Whittle was remanded in custody following this alleged incident.

Opposing bail, an ivnestigating oficer said the the proposed bail address is with a ‘friend of a friend’ in Newtownabbey.

The officer said this is a one bedroom flat and police do not believe it is suitable.

She added that Whittle has a ‘history of violence’ and police fear he will commit further offences.

Deputy District Judge Paul Conway refused bail for fear of further offences.

He also expressed concern at the proposed bail address.

Whittle was remanded in custody to appear in court again on April 28.
