Shooting in Derry : ‘No place for guns on our streets’

Gun attacks on our streets have no place in Derry in 2021, local politicians have warned after a man in his 30s was shot in Creggan last night.

Detectives are appealing for information following the shooting in the Southway area on Wednesday night.

The man was shot in the leg shortly before 7:30pm and he has since been taken to hospital for treatment to his injuries.

A car was also torched in the area.

Detective Sergeant Burns said: “Enquiries are continuing and at this stage, we are treating this shooting incident as a paramilitary style assault.

“Those responsible for this barbaric act do not represent the interests of this community, nor do they contribute anything to it.

“They do it to try and exert influence, or gain control of those they claim to represent.”

MP for Foyle Colum Eastwood has condemned the shooting of a man and the setting on fire of a car in Creggan tonight.

Colum Eastwood said: “Tonight’s shooting and disturbances in Creggan are senseless acts designed to intimidate, threaten and terrorize our community.”

“The people of Creggan and Derry do not want this mindless violence. Actions like these do not belong in Derry in 2021.

“My thoughts are with the man who has been shot and I wish him a speedy recovery. “

Sinn Féin Councillor Tina Burke meanwhile said: “I condemn the shooting of a man in Creggan tonight.

“There is no place for guns on our streets.
