Derry Palestine solidarity group to protest at border over visa denial

The Derry branch of the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) will be hosting Palestinian activist Iyad Burnat across the border in Killea on Friday after he was denied a visa to enter the United Kingdom.

Mr Burnat, described by the IPSC as a human rights activist from Bil’in, is currently on an Irish speaking tour.

Catherine Hutton of the Derry IPSC said: “Derry IPSC were unable to host him in the city.

“We will be holding a protest at the Killea border between Derry and Donegal to highlight this unfair, arbitrary decision to try and shut his voice down.

“We want to encourage as many people as possible to attend.”

In a statement the IPSC said: “Iyad will describe what life is like under Israeli occupation, his village’s ongoing struggle for justice, human rights and freedom, and what inspires him to continue non-violent resistance.

“Born in 1973, Iyad Burnat is the head of the Bil’in popular committee and Friends of Freedom and Justice and will be a familiar figure to the many Irish who have travelled to Bil’in over the past number of years. “In 2015, Iyad was the recipient of the James Lawson Award for Achievement in the Practice of Nonviolent Conflict.”

The talk will take place in the Killea Community Hall at 7pm.
