DfI officials find no evidence raised kerbs would prevent flooding at homes

Infrastructure Minister John O’Dowd has said an analysis by department officials found no evidence raising kerbs in a Waterside estate would prevent inundations at two homes affected by flooding ‘during periods of exceptional rainfall’.

The minister expressed sympathy with the homeowners who, he said, were being supported through his department’s Homeowner Flood Protection Grant scheme.

Foyle SDLP MLA Sinéad McLaughlin asked the minister if he will ‘consider the introduction of flood prevention measures for Rossmore, Derry, including the raising of kerbs and the implementation of a new drainage system to direct flood water away from homes’.

He replied: “I understand that there are two properties within the development that have been affected by flooding during periods of exceptional rainfall.

"While this is indeed regrettable and I empathise with the homeowners, my officials advise that the existing drainage system is adequate for dealing with normal rainfall conditions and as such there are no proposals to put in a new drainage system.

"There is also no evidence to suggest that raising the kerbs would reduce the risk of flooding during potential future exceptional rainfall events.”

Mr. O’Dowd said supports were being made available to the householders affected by flooding within the Waterside estate.

“I am also advised the two property owners made applications under the Homeowner Flood Protection Grant scheme, both of which were successful, and that protection measures have recently been installed.

“Should you have any further questions on this matter, please contact DfI Roads Western Division at: [email protected],” he stated.
