All Derry cemeteries to remain closed for a second day

Derry’s cemeteries are to stay closed for a second day today, the Council confirmed.

The gates will remain locked on New Year’s Eve due to hazardous conditions and for health and safety reasons.

A Council spokesperson said: “Due to heavy overnight sleet and frost, all cemeteries within the Derry area - City Cemetery, Ballyoan and Altnagelvin - are currently closed for health and safety reasons.

“They will be opened as soon as it is safe to do so.

“All burials will operate as normal and access will be limited to those attending.”

The cemeteries were also closed to the public on Wednesday for the same reasons.

Meanwhile the Council has also urged people to observe the rules around attending recycling centres.

The spokesperson said: “If you must make an essential journey to a Council Recycling Centre in the coming days, please remember that social distancing measures are in place to keep everyone safe, which may cause some delays.

“We are asking that you plan your journey for later in the day during quieter periods to help keep traffic flowing smoothly. If you can avoid a visit at this time then please do so. We really appreciate your cooperation.”
