Heavy snowfall in parts of north west overnight

Heavy snowfall has led to warnings of hazardous conditions across Counties Derry and Donegal this morning.

Snow showers arrived overnight, affecting many areas, including parts of Derry’s cityside and Waterside, Buncrana, Carndonagh, and the road between Limavady and Coleraine and the Glenshane.

Most main roads across Derry city this morning were free of snow or passable with care, but outlying areas may pose dangers for motorists.

In many cases, roads were gritted last night but much of that grit may have been washed off due to drifts of sleet and snow overnight.

The snow is expected to clear with rain predicted throughout today, but there are warnings that snow could return throughout this week with gritting and other infrastructure staff on standby.

A cold week is in store with temperatures and a Yellow warning for snow and rain remains in place at present.
