In order to help ensure the safety of road users and road workers, residents are asked to comply with all temporary traffic restrictions and to take extra care when travelling in the vicinity of the works. The dates and duration of the works will be dependent on the weather, but the scheme is expected to be completed towards the middle of March 2021.

Sinn Féin Councillor Sandra Duffy has welcomed the lighting upgrade.

Colr. Duffy said: “Residents in Moss Park will welcome the news that a street lighting upgrade scheme is underway.

“This scheme involves the replacement of the existing lights with a new LED lighting system and includes a full replacement of all underground cables and columns. Hopefully disruption will be kept to a minimum and I would ask residents to understand why any restrictions are put in place during this time.”

SDLP Councillor Brian Tierney also welcomed the new lighting.

He said: “This is great news for Derry. We are finally seeing investment at the scale needed to make a difference. This welcome investment provides new LED technology along Moss Park. This will improve the quality of lighting but is also more energy efficient, reflecting Minister Mallon’s commitment to climate action.”

“This investment underscores the SDLP commitment to regionally balanced infrastructure and I’m delighted that SDLP Minister Mallon has made our community a priority.”

“There will be some disruption for the next few weeks as work is underway but the Department has provided assurances that this will be managed as much as possible so that people can get where they need to go.”
