Recruitment begins today, Thursday May 28, and the closing date for applications is Friday 12 June 2020.

Chief Fire & Rescue Officer (Interim), Michael Graham, NIFRS, said: “Being a Firefighter is not like any other job- the community calls on us when they are most in need of our help.

“We respond to challenging incidents including fires; road traffic collisions; water rescues; and chemical incidents; as well as many other types of emergencies.

“We also provide community education; and deliver fire and accident prevention activities, all designed to help keep the community safe.

“Essential recruitment of Firefighters must continue, despite Covid-19, to ensure we have sufficient people to allow us to continue to protect our community.”

He added: “It is an exciting and rewarding career, but it is very challenging- Firefighters have to deal with difficult incidents; are required to work shifts and on public holidays; and could be stationed anywhere in Northern Ireland.

“They have to be physically strong and need to maintain their fitness throughout their career. It is also a robust and lengthy recruitment process, with many stages, and so applicants must be committed to investing a lot of their time to the process.”
