House Sparrows swooped into top spot locally after being seen in around 76 per cent of gardens and green spaces in Derry.

Noisy and gregarious, these cheerful exploiters of man’s rubbish and wastefulness have managed to colonise most of the world.

Starlings came a close second with Chaffinches in third.

Running parallel to the ‘Big Garden Birdwatch’ was ‘Big Schools’ Birdwatch’which this year saw 11 schools across Derry take part - including a small pilot carried out completely in the Irish language.
