Laurentic remembered in Inishowen

A number of Canadian visitors were in attendance and embarked on a coach tour of the Peninsula that had started by a wreath laying ceremony on Friday at at Mura’s Church of Ireland Cemetery, Fahan. The Canadian Ambassador was in attendance throughout the morning, as was the respective clergy from both communities with local councillors. A further ceremony ensued at St Mary’s Cemetery, Cockhill at 11am, led by a piper Captain Billy Doherty and minute silence accompanied by a violin interlude “Laurentic Lament” afterwards by Liz Doherty. A heartfelt poem was read by Mr Eddie Lavery entitled “The Morning Dawn” that brought the proceedings to a close. The reception took place at Fort Dunree at 12:00 noon after a stroll around the grounds and inspection of the military memorabilia. John McCarter Chairman for the Dunree Museum presented the Canadian Ambassador with a photograph of the museum as a memento of his visit. Working with organiser Don McNeill, an proactive advocate for this event and in conjunction with Inishowen Tourism and Mr McCarter of the Dunree Military Museum welcome packs were kindly provided by members and sponsors of the event; a copy of the Inishowen Visitor Guide to take home to Canada was included in the packs.
